Would any war veterans here say that their witnessing atrocious evil changed their prior view of God?

My own experience in the liberation of Dachau eventually (years later) brought me to a relationship with God but I had at least one comrade with an entirely opposite reaction. [Honestly I don't know how others in my unit reacted in spiritual terms because I lost track of most of them.] Do you think personally witnessing extreme evil usually tends to bring people closer to or farther from a relationship with God?
